came out from new york to get away from the weather and take my chances with the earthquakes and i have. i want too compliment the captain, because she inherited some problems and i have been very involved in this community and many areas of community and have fought for many issues. right now, i am concerned and i know the captain is working on a program. but i'm concerned about the traffic, the pedestrian safety, i live on arguello and geary. i have been a victim of the negligence of the sidewalks. my concern and i have had many people communicate with me, right now, about clement street, and the issues there. there is one particular partial that is blocking the sidewalk. their merchandise is taking up parking spaces and there doesn't seem to be anything done about it. i am just wondering about the enforcement, who is going to be responsible? i have also been a victim on that street and back in 1993 and ' 94 i was one of the co-founders of "clean up [khr-efplt/] clement street." and we had a meeting at that time at french hospital and we had over 400, 500 people show up. we had everyb

new york and chicago have both released pedestrian action plans. san francisco has led the state with creating new 15 mile an hour speed zones around all 181 schools city-wide, which is really exciting. it's a really important first step. and now san francisco can lead the way with a strong and effective pedestrian strategy. to make the most sustainable form of transportation, walking, also the most safe and comfortable for everyone. thank you. (applause) >> thank you, elizabeth. there's a lot of different city staff and other members of the city family that work every day to try to make san francisco safer. you've heard some of it, the 15 mile an hour zones. we're enhancing crosswalks around the city. we're bolding out sidewalks to make crossing distances smaller. we're using automated -- we're using red lighten forcement, photo red lighten forcement. a lot of things that many of the planners and engineers at the mta are doing to try to make the city safer, and will be the ones in whose hands a lot of the execution of the pedestrian strategy lies.

we looked at portland, vancouver, new york, and also national doubt data from the association of pedestrian and bicycles. based on research, we have made some changes. i will first briefly discuss the impetus behind this legislation and next summarize the existing bicycle parking requirements in the planning code and discuss the ordinance in detail. i want to acknowledge sfmta, who is here, if you have any questions. bicycle ridership has significantly increased in san francisco over the past few years. sfmta's annual count shows ridership has more than doubled since 2006. this report also estimated over 75,000 daily bike commutes in san francisco. with all of that ridership, the city has only 3,000 bike racks on the sidewalks. it requires better infrastructure, including bicycle parking. the san francisco bike plan was adopted in 2009, a collaboration between board of mta and the planning department. san francisco bike plan is an implementation arm for our general plan and this calls for plentiful and high-quality parking as one ever of its goals. first adopted in 1996 and at that time the
